7. Objectives, learning outcomes and obtained knowledge

To provide both theoretical and practical knowledge about communication networks, especially about telecommunication networks. Starting from the classical telephony networks, through mobile (cell)  phone systems and IP access networks, to high speed backbones, the students of this course will get acquainted with the architecture of these networks, along with their main building blocks as well as the communication protocols they apply. This course, in accordance with Communication Networks 1, aims to provide strong foundation for the relevant specialization courses.

8. Synopsis
  • Introduction to  the course
  • Basics
    • Overview of telephony networks
    • Analog and digital speech transfer
    • Architecture of telephony switches
  • Wired IP access networks
    • Digital subscriber loops (xDSL)
    • Cable television Internet access
    • Optical access networks
  • Voice over IP (VoIP)
    • speech codecs, SIP and H.323 protocols
  • 3play services: Video on Demand, IPTV, etc.
  • Mobile telephony networks
    • overview, GSM, UMTS, HSPA, LTE, satellite telephony systems
  • Signaling
  • Backbone network technologies
    • MPLS and its extensions, optical wavelength- and waveband switching
  • Outlook: Peer-to-peer, AdHoc networks, Machine to machine communication – Internet of Things

The lectures are accompanied by laboratory measurements: 3 measurements, each 4x45 minutes, allowing the students to exercise with some of the technologies discussed above (e.g. VoIP, DSL, telephony switches).

9. Method of instruction

Lectures and laboratory measurements

10. Assessment
  1. During the teaching period of the semester:
    • one mid-term test with a passing grade
    • taking part in all the laboratory measurements, with a passing grade for each
  2. During the exam period:
    • written exam.
    • 10% of the exam points are based on the mid-term test (or one of its repeated tests), further 5% of the exam points are calculated by the average of the laboratory measurements results.
  3. An early exam-grade of 5 can be gained by an outstanding mid-term test, but only on the first (regular) mid-term test. Early exam-grade are exempt from the regular exam. The condition for this grade is an excellent level mid-term test and all the laboratory measurements done with top grade.
  4. For the laboratory work the students have to prepare in advance. The competence of students will be checked at the beginning of the lab work. In case of insufficient knowledge the student cannot take part in lab work.
  5. The lab work will be graded. The grade includes the preparedness of the student, the performance during the measurements as well as the quality of the measurement report.
  6. For the lab measurement the students have to enroll in advance, as described at the beginning of the semester. Singing up and signing out to and from the measurement can only be done by a deadline described at the beginning of the semester. Failing to show up on a measurement results in fail grade.
11. Recaps Mid-term tests can be repeated (if missed or failed) one time during the teaching period of the semester and one time immediately after the teaching period. Only one of the lab measurements can be repeated, also during the teaching period.
12. Consultations

In the breaks of classes and after the classes as well as in any appointed time interval.
