Biography of Prof. Dr. Gyarmati Péter, emeritus, Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science and Professor of Mathematics & Computer Science
Peter G. Gyarmati graduated as an electrical engineer and later as a mathematician in Hungary, and then received his doctorate (1972) in computer science from the University of Manchester. He worked at IBM and ICL in their research centers, primarily in networking: Aloha Net and later on TCP/IP. His patents of international importance (1980) are for the handheld computer and removable memory. In 1998, he was invited to the United States, to Stanford University, as a research professor, and his task was to introduce STEM-type education, in addition to network research. His mentor, Edward Teller, as a scientist at the interface between mathematics and physics, influenced him to devote considerable time to popularizing non-Euclidean geometry. He continued his research work for a few years as the director of a research group at the University of Cambridge in the UK, then retired in Hungary. He has written 19 books and more than 50 research papers. Today, he conducts research work on scientific issues in artificial intelligence and is a regular speaker at international conferences. He has several publications on the subject, not only in English, but also in Hungarian, including the Thoughts on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning series.
